Whether you're a fan of Emily Blunt's iconic role as Miranda Priestly's disgruntled first assistant in The Devil Wears Prada, or more recently as Evelyn Abbott in A Quiet Place II, there's no denying her timeless star quality—which was personified by her Chanel-inspired outfit and glowing glam at the 2023 Met Gala.
Dressed in a black and white ensemble designed by Michael Kors for this year's Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty theme, Blunt's oversized bow and flowing train undoubtedly took center stage. But on the beauty front, the actress's minimal dark manicure, plus her seemingly effortless updo and makeup perfectly juxtaposed with Kors' structured sophistication—which is exactly what Blunt and team intended for this year's gala.
BAZAAR.com caught up with Blunt's long-time hair stylist Laini Reeves and makeup artist Jenn Streicher for a behind-the-scenes look at Blunt's latest red carpet staples for the first Monday in May.
How long have you each worked with Emily?
Reeves: For over a decade!
Streicher: I've been working with Emily for over 13 years!
What were some of the ideas you and Emily discussed when concepting her hair and makeup looks for the 2023 Met Gala?
Reeves: We discussed whether she should wear it up or down, curly or straight—the main decision is always made when we see what the designer has created.
Streicher: She really loved her outfit, and ultimately knew she wanted to wear her hair up because of its large bow. She really tends to stay more classic when it come to makeup: We don't do a lot of trends.
How does Emily’s beauty look complement her outfit choice for the occasion?
Reeves: Jenn and I are a well-oiled machine and we are always in rhythm.
Streicher: Emily wanted the outfit to be the focus of her look. So, I think the hair and makeup nicely complement it without taking too much attention away.
Could you share some of the skin prep you did on the star ahead of makeup application?
Streicher: Emily is very good about taking care of her skin. She had a facial [by Lord Gavin McLeod-Valentine with Augustinus Bader] the morning of the occasion, so I followed with Monastery's Aloe Hyaluronic Boost and Flora Botanical Cream Serum to give her complexion that ultra-hydrated, dewy look.
What were some of the core products used to create Emily's Met Gala hair and makeup looks?
Reeves: In addition to John Frieda's Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Touch Up Crème and Extra Strength Serum, I also used the brand's Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray to keep her updo in place. A single blow-dryer was the only hot tool used on Emily's hair!
Streicher: After Monastery, we prepped Emily's skin with Ilia’s True Skin Radiant Priming Serum and Bright Start Retinol Alternative Eye Cream around the eyes. Then, I used a little of the brand's Liquid Light Serum Highlighter in Atomic to highlight her cheekbones before using the Super Serum Skin Tint in Ora all over the face. I also placed just a few dabs of True Skin Serum Concealer in Yucca under her eyes. Next, I used Liquid Eyeshadow in the shade Glaze over the entire eye area, along with the color Burnished on her lid. I then moved on to colors from Ilia's Necessary Eyeshadow Palette in Warm Nude, using lighter, sparkly shades to add focus to her inner lid.
I also added lots of false lashes, and a couple coats of Fullest Volumizing Mascara, and the Clean Line Liquid Liner in Midnight Express right on her lash line. And on Emily's cheeks, I used the Multi-Stick in Tenderly, plus the DayLite Highlighting Powder in Starstruck, just above her cheekbones. Lastly, I used Ilia's Color Block Lipstick in Rosette for a subtle pinkish nude tone on her lips.
Are there any makeup products that you’ve recommended Emily keep in her purse for touch-ups?
Streicher: She always leaves with the lipstick I've used for the occasion, along with some blotting papers.
How do you ensure her final look stays in place all night?
Streicher: Pray.
