Emily Blunt Required Prosthetics to Make Her Look Ugly in The Girl on The Train

Emily Blunt has been on a impressive style streak during her promotional tour for her new film The Girl on the Train. Just over three months after giving birth to her daughter Violet, she’s been wearing one stop-and-stare look after another — from a bluebird-adorned Alexander McQueen gown to bell-sleeve jumpsuits. And she’s topping it all off with a high-fashion spread and cover of InStyle‘s November issue.
The actress graces the magazine in a sexy lace cutout Stella McCartney dress and is decked out in high-fashion designers in the inside spread from Marc Jacobs to Gucci. And she explains in the accompanying interview that her on-point red carpet style comes from one straight forward style motto — nothing too girlie or whimsical. “For the red carpet, I like formfitting clothes,” she says. “I’m not so good with the sort of ethereal, girlie, whimsical things. I tend to go for dresses that have bold cuts and strong colors.”

To gear up for her current promo tour, the actress, who recently welcomed second daughter Violet, had a big at-home fitting with her stylist Jessica Paster, saying at the time, “My friend is coming over with a nice bottle of pinot noir, so it might be a pump-and-dump night.”
And no one was more excited than her 2-year-old daughter Hazel. “My daughter thinks it is thrilling when my stylist comes over with racks of clothes,” Blunt says. “I always let her try on the stilettos.”

Her natural tendency to looking put-together and lovely at all times actually turned out to be a bit of a liability on the set of The Girl on the Train. To transform into her alcoholic, depressed character, she actually had to have cheek plumpers made to make her face look puffy, and change between various bloodshot contact lenses, depending on her character’s level of intoxication.
“Kyra [Panchenko] is so talented,” Blunt says of her makeup artist. “She used gray eye shadow under my eyes to bring out the circles and a little brush to paint spider veins all over my face.”
The film’s director Tate Taylor said making Blunt look disheveled was quite a challenge. “I kept saying to the crew, ‘All right, can we get [the makeup team] back in here and make her look a little more drunk and ugly?‘”
