Emilia Clarke says her 2019 Emmys look was inspired by Jennifer Lopez’s iconic dress

Amid the history-making wins (Billy Porter taking the prize for Lead Actor in a Drama Series), fearless acceptance speeches (Michelle Williams taking on the pay gap), and a glorious onslaught of red-and-pink gowns, you may have missed a crucial sartorial announcement from last night’s 2019 Emmys. Emilia Clarke said her awards show “lewk” was inspired by the one and only Jennifer Lopez.

Clarke posted the Instagram announcement on her way to Sunday’s Emmys. Along with a close-up portrait of her glowing face and her colorful David Webb drop earrings, the Emmys presenter and nominee wrote: @emmys2019 WE BE ROLLLLLIN! @jlo just as heads up you have inspired this years lewk.”

Although Clarke didn’t specify which Lopez look she’s referring to, we’re guessing it’s the Hustlers star’s iconic 2000 Grammys Versace dress. It’s so iconic, in fact, that Lopez recently closed out Versace’s Spring 2020 runway show in a revamped version of the dress that was so powerful it literally invented Google Images.

When we saw a full-length shot of Clarke’s red carpet gown, we totally understood how her inspiration came into play. Like the barely-there neckline on Lopez’s Versace gown(s), Clarke’s navy Valentino dress plunged to her waist.

In her Instagram post, Clarke also shouted out to “the best glam squad ever invented. But we’d like to point out that Clarke’s hashtag game was also, to use Clarke’s words, “on fyre” last night. She added:

“#motherofdragonstakesafinalgoodbye #mighthaveneededadragontogetmethereontime 🤢#iplanonseeingtomorrowssunrise #🍾#✌️ #😂 #❤️”

What can we say? We can’t resist a dragon reference from the Mother of Dragons herself.

The Game of Thrones star snagged a Lead Actress in a Drama nomination for her role as Daenerys Targaryen (First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and First Men, etc.). Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer took home that statue, but we think Clarke wins for her sexy and sophisticated look—which just might become a classic in its own right.
