Elliot Page, who is best known for his work in films like Juno and Inception, came out as transgender on Tuesday. In a heartfelt note posted on social media, the actor announced that his pronouns are he/they and addressed fans about his journey, thanking those who have supported him as he's made his way to this particular moment. In the letter, he notes, "My joy is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared."

The actor then used his platform to highlight many of the issues that plague the trans community—in particular, those who are disproportionately affected in the Black and Latinx communities. As he mentions, nearly 40 trans people have been murdered in the United States this year, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Globally, that number soars into the hundreds. Page addresses political leaders who advocate against trans rights in particular, saying that they have "blood on their hands."

The note, while celebratory, is also an exemplary display of the conflicting feelings that are just inherent to the coming out process. It's easy to feel like the road is over after the "big announcement," but as Page points out, it's less of an ending and more of a new beginning. Page's ability to embrace his queerness and share his journey over the past couple years has been refreshing, reshaping so many of the stereotypes and barriers that Hollywood has up for queer performers.

In the replies to Page's letter, fans have poured out congratulatory messages for Page, including the official Netflix account, who said "WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT!" before adding that they can't wait to see the actor return for season three of his successful Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy. On Valentine's Day of 2014, Page came out as gay in a powerful Human Rights Campaign speech and has since been a tireless advocate for the LGBTQ community. In 2018, he married his partner, Emma Portner.
