Good news–bad news for fans of Ellen Pompeo and Grey’s Anatomy. The actor has just signed on to a limited series at Hulu, but that means she won’t be as available for the next season of the hit medical drama. Yup, Meredith Grey is taking a step back.
According to Variety, her new project is based on real events, in which “a Midwestern couple adopts what they believe is an eight-year-old girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, they slowly start to believe she may not be who she says she is. As they question her story, they’re confronted with hard questions of their own about the lengths they’re willing to go to defend themselves, falling into a battle that’s fought in the tabloids, the courtroom, and ultimately their marriage.” (Sounds like Orphan, no?)
The same article reports that Pompeo will only appear in eight episodes of the upcoming 19th season of Grey’s, but will still be the show’s weekly narrator and an executive producer on the series. The next season, which will premiere October 6, just added a bunch of new residents, so maybe less Meredith means more time to get to know them! No word yet on how the show will explain its protagonist’s absence. An extended vacation, perhaps? Lord knows she deserves it.
Ellen Pompeo hasn’t commented on the news, or on her future with the long-running series, but when costar Jessie Williams left last year, Pompeo did offer some words of wisdom about navigating changes: “‘Life is a balance between holding on & letting go’ -Rumi. ‘Stay far from timid. Only make moves when your heart’s in it. And live the phrase ‘sky’s the limit.’” -The Notorious B.I.G., ‘Sky’s the limit,’” she wrote on Instagram.
The irony is, an adoptee with a rare form of dwarfism and/or a secret would make a great patient for Dr. Meredith Grey!
