Sunday marked World Cancer Day, an annual occasion held on Feb. 4 to raise international awareness of the disease. Actress and model Elizabeth Hurley used her platform to remind her 2.8 million Instagram followers of the importance of advocating for one’s own health.
“💗💗 This World Cancer Day, I want to take a moment to honour and recognise all those touched by cancer,” the 58-year-old thoughtfully wrote in her caption. “As the Global Ambassador of @esteelaudercompanies Breast Cancer Campaign, today is a reminder to advocate for your own health. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and leading cause of cancer death for women worldwide. It’s more important than ever to self-check, stay on top of routine screenings and encourage your loved ones to do the same.”
Alongside the important reminder, Hurley shared a photo of herself from an Estée Lauder breast cancer event held last October. She wore a hot pink power suit for the occasion and posed with her arms crossed in front of her middle.
The Serving Sara star lost her grandmother to breast cancer in 1992 and has long been an advocate for breast cancer awareness.
“It is so important that women (and men) advocate for their health, know their bodies and are aware of their family health history, whenever possible,” Hurley urged in a self-penned essay in 2021. “Go for your regular health appointments and screenings and tell your doctor if you notice any changes. Lead a healthy lifestyle with plenty of exercise, proper nutrition and stress reduction. Get a mammogram if you are at the appropriate age or have consulted with your doctor and remind your friends and loved ones to do the same.”
