East Carolina QB Gardner Minshew withdraws from school for family matter
East Carolina announced Tuesday that quarterback Gardner Minshew was no longer a student at the school because of a family matter in his home state of Mississippi.
The team said in the release that Minshew would have an opportunity to return to the team if circumstances allowed. Minshew was the team’s most productive quarterback in 2017 and started five games.
“Our full support is for Gardner and his family during this time,” East Carolina coach Scottie Montgomery said in a statement. “He’s been an asset and leader in our program, but our first priority is to be there for him today, tomorrow and the days afterward. The door will certainly remain open for his return to ECU, and when it’s appropriate for us to talk about football again, we will do so.”
Minshew was set to be a senior in 2018. He received his undergrad degree in December.
Minshew, who transferred to ECU from Northwest Mississippi Community College, was 174-304 passing for 2,140 yards, 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was 52-68 passing for 463 yards and two touchdowns in a November loss to Houston. The 52 completions were an American Athletic Conference record.
ECU finished the season 3-9.
