Our first glimpse at the musical soundtrack behind the eagerly anticipated Melina Matsoukas’ directed film Queen & Slim is here — and it’s an unexpected but perfectly curated collab between jazzy R&B singer Tiana Major9 and Atlanta hip-hop duo EarthGang titled “Collide."
Queen & Slim — set to be released in theaters November 27 and with a screenplay written by Lena Waithe — tells a “consciousness-raising love story” on how the tolls of racism, police brutality, and the daily trials of living life while Black affect our most intimate relationships.
The coinciding video, directed by LX Music, was shot in London on one of the city’s traditional gray and gloomy days, echoing the sentiment and visual aesthetic of the upcoming film.
The song and video’s most brow-raising element is the showcasing of Johnny Venus’ smooth skills as a vocalist, breaking away from his signature rapping style for the moody and romantic track. The effortless combination of the melancholic backdrop of London, Tiana’s sultry vocals and EarthGang’s musical range provides the ultimate first taste of what the film’s upcoming soundtrack will provide.
While Queen & Slim is set to be a blunt and bold cinematic ode to Black life, the accompanying soundtrack is set to be the film’s musical narration with a stacked list of features from hip-hop and R&B’s biggest acts. According to an official press release, filmgoers can expect Blood Orange produced tracks from Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Baby, Vince Staples, Syd, and more when the soundtrack releases on November 15.
