Though they started out in the world of home goods, Dyson has become quite the game-changing beauty brand, already garnering a loyal following with their top-of-the-line haircare products like the Supersonic Hairdryer and Airwrap Styler.

Their third hair care product, the Corrale Hair Straightener launched earlier this year to much fanfare, as the brand’s first straightener that can be used both plugged in and as a cordless styling tool. Curious to see how it truly performs, I of course had to put it to the test.

How does it work?

The Dyson Corrale is a hybrid cordless hair straightener that uses heat reliant technology rather than the standard air technology. Dyson bills itself as the "only straightener with flexing copper plates that shape to gather hair," which means that the copper plates allows you to quickly style hair with less heat exposed to the strands, thereby causing half the damage. Plus, with three heat settings, the Corrale works for all types of hair — from coarse, super curly hair to thin, fine locks.

While the Dyson Corrale normally retails for a whopping $650, if you’re a Sephora Beauty Insider, you can snag one now through Nov. 9 at up to 20 per cent off depending on your membership status.

First impressions

For someone with dry and damaged hair, I was really happy to see that the flexing plates allowed much less heat exposure on my strands. The iron lets you choose between three heat settings: 330° F, 365° F and 410° F. For my coarse, super curly hair, I went for 410° F.

While many users claim to only need one pass over their locks, my hair is super frizzy and needed two passes for a completely straight style. That's still way better than other flat irons I’ve used that need multiple passes on each section of my hair. Also, not hearing or feeling the sizzle as my hair was getting done was a major plus, since I knew it wasn't getting damaged with the heat.

I also really liked how easy it was to make light waves and curls since I'm not the best with a flat iron — straightening my hair itself is a huge ordeal. So the ability to easily adapt to a different style using the same tool was a welcome feature.

Is it worth it?

Honestly, yes. Instead of taking two hours to straighten my entire head of hair, I was able to get it done in just about an hour with the Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener. This was a huge draw for me, combined with the fact that I love the results of silky, smooth hair with half the heat exposure. The ability to travel around with a cordless flat iron is also really a plus, especially if you need to touch up your hair while you're on the go.

The only big downside to the Dyson hair straightener is the heavy $650 price tag, really. Also, if you're using the straightener cordless, you'll notice that the battery only lasts 30 mins with a full charge. You have to then wait for it to recharge for another 25 - 30 minutes to get it back to about 90 percent. And unfortunately when the battery is dead, you can’t just plug it in and continue using it while it charges. This should be considered, especially if you have a lot of hair and it takes you more than 30 minutes to straighten your hair.

However, with the current Sephora Holiday Savings Event on now, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of sale prices on Dyson styling products and soften the blow to your wallet.
