The ballroom competition show announced On Wednesday that while every couple on the show will perform two dances next week — a competitive performance with their partner and a dance-off against another couple — Van Der Beek and his dance pro partner Emma Slater will only perform once.
Since the duo consistently tops the leader board and has the highest combined score, they are exempt from having to participate in the dance-off.
The possibility of being exempt from the dance-off the following week was not stated during Monday night's show which left many fans surprised when it was announced on the show's Instagram. "How did they earn immunity from the dance-off? I'm a little confused" one fan commented. "Excuse me why does he get this? I'm confused," another said.
While only having to learn one dance will certainly make things easier for Van Der Beek and Slater, the exemption does not give the couple full immunity, and they are still at risk of being sent home during the elimination.
The remaining couples participating in the dance-off will be competing for an extra two points that will be added to their overall score. But with the way the scoring and voting system has been going (ahem, Sean Spicer still being on the show despite significantly lower judges' scores than everyone else) we'll just have to wait and see if the extra points make a difference.
Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
