Dust Off Your Leather Trenches— The Matrix 4 Is Happening!

Good news, fans of The Matrix: there’s a new sequel in the works. Today, it was announced that Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct a fourth film in the action series, the latest follow-up since The Matrix Revolutions back in 2003. Original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as the iconic leather-clad duo Neo and Trinity. Meanwhile, Laurence Fishburne, who played Morpheus, has yet to sign onto the reboot.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” said Wachowski, the original director who co-directed the first three films with her sister, Lilly Wachowski. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Production will begin on the project in 2020, so fans will have to wait a while before the latest adaptation hits theaters. (Time for a marathon recap, filled with loads of virtual reality and slow-mo, bullet-bending fight scenes.) But something to look forward to? The new costume design, of course. Sure, The Matrix is a fan-favorite because of its killer action sequences and what not—but lest one forget that Neo and Trinity are an iconic duo style-wise. Their sleek leather trenches have even been trending with celebrities lately—and we personally can’t wait to see where the costume designer takes their battle gear in the present day.
