Dua Lipa Proves Ripped Tights Don’t Have to Be a Fashion Emergency

It’s a wardrobe snafu that happens all too often: pairing your minidress with a pair of perfect sheer tights, then promptly discovering a tear. Those stealthy runs seem to appear out of nowhere—and even worse if you’re wearing an expensive pair from Wolford! But a snag in one’s hosiery doesn’t have to be such a mortifying deal-breaking experience (I’ve witnessed friends go as far as bringing a backup pair). In fact, singer Dua Lipa is making the case for fully committing to ripped tights instead.

Lipa, who is making the promo rounds for her new single, “Don’t Start Now,” uploaded a photo of herself in Germany rocking her torn tights. “I’ve gone through four pairs of tights with this dress,” she wrote, referencing the leather mini dress with crystal studs she wore from Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini’s Spring 2020 collection. (The hosiery must have gotten caught on one of the studs.)

Now, ripped tights is a grunge-chic staple that’s been embraced by rockers such as Courtney Love and even designers like Alexander Wang, so Lipa further leaned into the sexy-tough aesthetic with mounds of chain necklaces, and a pair of strappy white Fenty pumps. Because that’s the beauty of fashion: if you rock a malfunction with confidence, it can be deemed a lewk.
