The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards is making its way to our screens in the spring to honor the creative prowess and icon status of this year's most influential entertainers.

For three decades, the awards show has commemorated some of our favorite onscreen highlights (and those who made them happen), including awarding Best Fight to Euphoria's Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Maddy (Alexa Demie), Best Music Documentary to Olivia Rodrigo's driving home 2 u, and Best Reality Return to Paris Hilton.

Though a live ceremony and red carpet were initially planned, MTV is shifting towards a clip-based show amid the ongoing Writer's Guild of America (WGA) strike. Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events at Paramount Global, confirmed to People that the show will no longer be live, and that the pre-show red carpet and talent interviews have been canceled.

"As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards' show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we're pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peaks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year," Gillmer said.

This year's awards show will take place on Sunday, May 7, starting at 8 p.m. ET. Ahead, see everything else to know about the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, including its performers, leading nominees, and presenters.

Who is hosting?

MTV previously announced that Drew Barrymore would host this year's show, with the talk show host sharing the news via a cute promo video released March 14 from the actress's "Drew's News Report" segment on The Drew Barrymore Show.

However, Barrymore bowed out of emceeing the program in solidarity with WGA members. The labor union, which represents more than 1,000 entertainment writers who work across film, television, news and digital media, went on strike after the May 1st deadline for a new union contract passed without a ratified film and scripted TV contract.

"I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike," the actress said in a statement. "Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of [writers'] creation. And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I'll be watching from home and hope you will join me."

"I thank MTV, who has truly been some of the best partners I have ever worked with," she continued. "And I can't wait to be a part of this next year, when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive."

Barrymore is still expected to appear in several pre-recorded segments during this year's awards broadcast, and has agreed to return to host the show in 2024.

Barrymore is a multi-winner herself, having nabbed Golden Popcorn trophies at previous ceremonies for Best Kiss with Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer (1998), Best On-Screen Team with Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu in Charlie's Angels (2001), and Best On-Screen Duo alongside Sandler for another film the two star in together, 50 First Dates (2004).

The actress was also nominated for Best Talk/Topical Show for The Drew Barrymore Show last year and honored as Dynamic Duo in 2020 at the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time with Adam Sandler, namely for their lead collaborations on several films including The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates, and Blended (2014).
