Akira Toriyama has died, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans across the world.

The legendary creator of best-selling manga-turned-anime Dragon Ball passed away on March 1 due to an acute subdural hematoma, which is a bleed near the brain, as confirmed in a statement posted on the official Dragon Ball website and issued by Toriyama’s Bird Studio.

“It's our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm,” reads the statement.

"Also, he would have many more things to achieve. However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world.”

First published in 1984, Dragon Ball became one of the most successful manga franchises of all time, later spinning off into a beloved anime series, as well as popular films and games.

Toriyama’s studio is continuing the work he started, however. His posthumous work includes an upcoming Dragon Ball anime titled Dragon Ball Daima, as well as a video game adaptation of his 2000's manga Sand Land.
