Dove Cameron on Her “Rigorous” Skin-Care, and Day-to-Night Makeup Routine

“I am pretty rigorous with my skin-care routine,” Dove Cameron says, peering into the camera. And rightly so: before coronavirus shut down sets around the world, the 24-year-old singer (she just released her new single, “Remember Me”) and actor spent months on location shooting upcoming films, such as Vengeance, during which she had to learn how to master her complexion—no matter the climate. “Every environment that I’m in, my skin changes a lot…[so I come] prepared for the skin apocalypse,” says Cameron, who always touches down with a “large suitcase” brimming with products.

At home in Los Angeles, her above-the-neck approach begins with a Shu Uemura cleanser (“ASMR,” she says, as she rubs the moringa and green-tea-rich oil between her palms) and a “life-changing” vitamin E oil, which she applies by lightly slapping her face—a circulation-boosting tip taught to her by an esthetician. “My skin is kind of thriving,” she adds, noting that, thanks to quarantine, she’s been getting more sleep and drinking more water than ever before. “Those things are really big keys for healthy skin—even more so than most products.”

“I can go anywhere from slight fresh glam to full beat,” Cameron explains, while pulling out a warm YSL foundation, which she often mixes with a lighter concealer and a neutral powder to achieve the pitch-perfect blended finish. This scrupulous approach to color cosmetics has made Cameron something of a pro: “In Descendants, I feel like I did all my own makeup all the time for the second and third films just because I was so particular at that point,” she recalls.

While she often stops there, today Cameron is going the extra mile: “I feel like I unlocked a secret for my eyes,” she says, while painting on a “goopy” base coat of Milk’s Kush Mascara “for big, thick, wild lashes,” which she amplifies with an ultra-skinny brown crayon smudged across her eyes, and a few faux add-ons. After a slick of lip gloss and a spritz of setting spray, Cameron smiles: “That’s it!”
