They Don't Teach You This Trick In Bike Mechanic School

Sometimes - who am I kidding, often times - being a bike mechanic requires you to "get a little Western with it," if you will. Rarely are repairs as straightforward as they would seem on paper and more often than not, skilled mechanics have to resort to less orthodox tactics.

Here is a very fitting example of one of those rather unorthodox tactics to get into a hub.

Entertainment aside, this should be a good enough glimpse behind the curtain at what goes on when you drop your clapped out bike for a service at the end of the season. It should also maybe give you a little nudge to thank your mechanic with a six-pack or a tip if they're stuck doing a particularly involved repair.

After all, mechanics and trailbuilders are the engine that drives this whole sport at the grassroots level. Take care of them and they will surely take care of you and your riding community!
