Don't Forget: The Post Office Is Closed on Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving can be a busy time, with extra trips to the grocery store to pick up last-minute essentials. You might even try to squeeze in a few more online orders to arrive in time for the big day or even order the perfect finishing touch for your Thanksgiving outfit. But before you stand outside waiting for your mail carrier to deliver mail, keep in mind that November 24 is a national holiday. And while you might see a UPS or Fedex truck on the road (they still deliver critical packages), don't expect to see USPS service running. If you have late Thanksgiving cards to get in the mail, you'll wait to wait until Friday.

Is the post office open on Thanksgiving Day 2022?

The USPS observes 10 holidays each year and Thanksgiving is among them. On Thanksgiving and the other nine holidays of the year (which include Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, among others), the USPS closes its doors and allows its employees to enjoy the holidays for themselves.

While the USPS is closed on Thanksgiving, that doesn’t mean that you can’t still think ahead with your mail deliveries. With a USPS.com account, you can buy stamps, order boxes, and print shipping labels so that when the post office reopens, you’ll be able to drop off your mail without waiting in a huge line—or, better yet, you can schedule a package pickup through your account.

If you’re simply trying to send out a letter or small package, though, it’s worth noting that mailboxes across the country will remain accessible, so you can pop in your item so that it’s ready for pickup when the postal service is back up and running on Black Friday.
