On March 15, Vanessa Trump filed for divorce from Donald Trump Jr. after 12 years of marriage. They released a statement the next day saying, "We have decided to go our separate ways. We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority. We ask for your privacy during this time."
In the statement, they didn't give a specific reason for the split, but that didn't stop people from speculating. From not being able to handle all the attention on their family to Vanessa's alleged "budget," here are all the alleged rumors why the couple is headed for splitsville:
The spotlight of the presidency was reportedly too much to handle.
According to Page Six, the Trump Jr. family didn't adjust well to the added spotlight and scrutiny of the presidency.
Last year, the Washington Post reported that Donald Jr. wanted to dismiss his 24-hour security detail permanently. “There are all these new people coming and going The kids don’t like that. They can’t get comfortable with someone they don’t know,” former Trump administration member and secret service agent Rich Staropoli told the Post at the time.
In February, Vanessa was hospitalized after opening a letter sent to Don Jr. that contained a white powder. Although the powder wasn't hazardous, Page Six reports it added to her anxiety.
“Vanessa is by nature is a very low-key person, and she is uncomfortable with the attention her family is getting now the Trumps are on the world stage," a source told Page Six. "She is also worried for her kids, particularly after she received the threatening letter containing the white powder.”
Donald Jr. had allegedly started to act like a different person.
According to sources who spoke to Page Six, Don Jr. hasn't been himself recently. He “appears to have changed, and friends are concerned about him.” In particular, friends and family were allegedly concerned with his activity on Twitter. After the Parkland shooting, he liked a tweet attacking one of the student survivors. He also liked a tweet linking antidepressants and mass shootings.
This past Halloween, he tweeted that he was going to take away his 3-year-old daughter Chloe's candy to "teach her about socialism."

It allegedly wasn't just the politically charged tweets posts that were upsetting to Vanessa, but rather his social media presence as a whole. “She hates that he posts stuff online, pictures of their kids and how he paints the picture of him as a perfect father, like he’s Mr. Dad," a source told Page Six. "It’s not the truth. And when he’s not away on business trips, he’s hunting and fishing."
A spokesperson for Vanessa denied this, saying "Any claims that she is unhappy with Don posting photos of their children on social is not true. In fact, Vanessa is usually the first to ‘like’ the posts that he shares. Don is a wonderful and very involved father.”
Donald Jr. was reportedly "cheap."
Another source told Page Six one of the reasons the couple is getting divorced is Don Jr. treats Vanessa like"a second-class citizen.” The source said he kept her on such a tight budget that she had to go to her mother to ask for money. “He gives her very little help and has been keeping her on a tight budget," the source said. "She doesn’t live a lavish life and can very rarely pick up a check at dinner.”
Although these claims aren't proven, it doesn't come as a shock considering Don Jr. proposed to Vanessa with a ring he'd gotten for free from a New Jersey jeweler in exchange for press. The couple got engaged in a shopping mall, and a New York Post headline called him the "Cheapest Gazillionaire" at the time.
A spokesperson for Vanessa denied that money disputes were the reason for the divorce. “All of these claims are simply not true," she said. "Don and Vanessa have tremendous respect for each other and always have. The notion that she has had to rely on her family for assistance is absolutely false and utterly ridiculous.”
