'He's just a kid': Don Cherry defends Auston Matthews in disorderly conduct charge
Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews is currently facing a disorderly conduct charge in Scottsdale, Arizona, but noted Hockey Night in Canada on-air personality Don Cherry is reportedly coming to his defence.
The often outspoken broadcaster shared his thoughts on the matter with Joe Warmington of the Toronto Sun.
“He without sin cast the first stone,” Cherry said. “He’s just a kid.”
While defending the Leafs’ centreman, Cherry also commented on Fayola Dozithee, the security guard who filed the charges against Matthews.
“I am flabbergasted she would report something like that,” he said. “I just hope she wasn’t looking for publicity.”
The charge stems from an incident which occurred on May 26, where Matthews reportedly tried to open Dozithee’s car door at 2:00 a.m. Once confronted by Dozithee, Matthews stated that he and his group of friends wanted to see how she would respond. She then told Matthews and his friends that she was a military veteran who suffers from PTSD. Matthews proceeded to walk away before dropping his pants and grabbing his buttocks with his underwear still on.
Dozithee told the police that she was terrified during the incident.
