  • Dolly Parton and other women in country music shared sweet tributes to the late country music legend Loretta Lynn.

  • Lynn died at age 90 on October 4 in her Hurricane Mills, Tennessee home.

  • “She was a wonderful human being, wonderful talent, had millions of fans and I’m one of them,” Parton wrote.

On October 4, country music legend Loretta Lynn died peacefully in her Hurricane Mills, Tennessee home, her family confirmed in a statement. The loss is a palpable one for women in country music, who saw Lynn as a trailblazing voice for them all in a male-dominated industry. Lynn’s passing is also especially significant for Dolly Parton, who treated Lynn more like a sister than a friend.

The Queen of Country shared her condolences on social media, remembering the “Coal Miner’s Daughter” singer with pride. “So sorry to hear about my sister, friend Loretta,” Parton wrote in a statement. “We’ve been like sisters all the years we’ve been in Nashville and she was a wonderful human being, wonderful talent, had millions of fans and I’m one of them. I miss her dearly as we all will. May she rest in peace.”

Other women in country, including Carrie Underwood and Reba McEntire, shared their own beloved experiences with Lynn in her memory. Underwood in particular had a funny story to share.

“The first time I met Loretta Lynn was at the Grand Ole Opry at the beginning of my career. I was chatting in the corner with another artist and someone walked behind me and smacked me on the rear end!” she wrote on Instagram. “I turned around and there she was…in a big sparkly dress…laughing as she continued to walk down the hall.”

Underwood continued: “This is one of my most favorite stories to tell. I think it sums up her personality pretty well. She was a cantankerous little pistol…friendly and sweet…never afraid to be herself and speak her mind ... She is irreplaceable. She will be incredibly missed…but her legacy lives on in those of us whom she has influenced.”

Reba McEntire compared Lynn to her own mother, calling her “fiercely loyal” and “strong.”

“I always did and I always will love Loretta,” she wrote under a smiling photo of them backstage together. “She was always so nice to me. I sure appreciate her paving the rough and rocky road for all us girl singers.”

Lynn was 90 years old when she died, but her legacy will live forever.
