  • Dolly Parton shared what she does to keep her marriage to Carl Dean alive.

  • The pair will celebrate 56 years of marriage in May.

  • “It’s important to me that I look as good as I can. I think it kind of helps keep things spicy.”

If there is a real secret to marriage success, Dolly Parton and Carl Dean would know it, considering they’ve been married for almost 56 years. In reality, though, the “Jolene” singer and her hubs do lots of different things to keep each other happy. For Parton, one of them is looking her best every day.

“I like to dress up for Carl,” she recently told E! News’ Daily Pop. “Every day, I put on some makeup and fix my hair because I think, ‘Well, the whole world, I’m out here and everybody else sees me all dressed up, and I’m not going to just kind of go home and just flop on him.’”

Dean intentionally keeps to himself while the singer-songwriter fulfills her role as Queen of Country, so she wants to make sure her husband of over 55 years feels the love, too. “Nobody wants to make out with a slouch!” she joked. “It’s important to me that I look as good as I can. I think it kind of helps keep things spicy.”

And even at 76, Parton isn’t afraid of going the extra mile to impress him on special occasions. For his birthday last year, she recreated her iconic 1978 Playboy cover and delivered it to him in the full bunny costume. Thankfully for us, she documented the surprise on Instagram.

“I was trying to think of something to do to make him happy. He still thinks I’m a hot chick after 57 years and I’m not gonna try to talk him out of that,” she said in the video.

In another recent interview with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on Today, the country star explained how she and Dean keep their romance “new.”

“We’re good people. We’re fun people. We both have a great sense of humor, and we like and respect each other. And we just have fun,” she said, adding with a laugh: “And I stay gone enough to keep it new.”

When the pair had to quarantine together at the start of the pandemic, they were around each other a lot more than they had grown used to—that’s where those good senses of humor came in handy. “The reason it worked for me is because I’ve stayed gone. I can’t get away now. I’m stuck there now,” she quipped in a 2020 interview with Kotb and Bush Hager. “I might find out who he is. We may not make it until the next anniversary.”

To no one's surprise, they did make it, and on May 30, they will happily celebrate another. We love their love!
