Duane Chapman, a.k.a. Dog the Bounty Hunter, was devoted to his wife Beth, who died in late June at age 51 after an ongoing battle with throat cancer. And, on the finale of his TV show Dog’s Most Wanted, Duane is shown contemplating suicide hours after Beth died.

"I’ve only been alone as I showered, and I had to run out without a towel, because I can’t be alone right now," the 66-year-old said during the finale, according to People. "That’s when I start thinking about things. And I lay down to take a nap, and I reached over to touch something, and it was the freaking dog. I don’t realize yet psychologically that she’s gone gone, and I’ll never, ever see her. I don’t realize that."

Duane also said he doesn’t want to live without his wife. "I just hope that I don’t live very much longer without her, because now she made the first step, she’s through the gate," he continued. "She paved a way for me. I want to take a goddamn pain pill so bad. I feel like if I did something to myself right now and passed away suicidal, and I got to heaven and was like, ‘Hi honey,’ and would she go, ‘You dumbass, why would you do that?’ Or would she go, ‘Wow, you’re here.’ I’ll be like ‘Of course I’m here. You left me. I’m here.’ So, am I obligated to do that?"

Beth was diagnosed with stage two throat cancer in 2017 and had surgery to remove the tumor. She then relapsed in November 2018 and had been fighting stage four throat cancer for several months when she died on June 26. Three months after his wife’s death, Duane learned during an episode of The Dr. Oz Show that he had a pulmonary embolism in his heart, a life-threatening condition where one or more of the arteries is blocked.

Duane told People at the time that he "hesitated" to seek treatment because he’s so wary of doctors and hospitals. "I hesitated for a minute thinking, I don’t want to have to go through this again," he said. "I don’t want to die right now. I’m not afraid to die anymore, but I really didn’t care for awhile if something would happen. I do care now."
