Tossing and turning at night and the weighted blanket and ear plugs just aren't helping? Simon Science says it's time to kick your significant other out of bed and invite your pup up to cuddle instead-at least, sort of.

According to a recent "Examination of Adult Women's Sleep Quality and Sleep Routines in Relation to Pet Ownership and Bedsharing" conducted by researchers at Canisius College, a majority of women slept better when sleeping next to a pooch when compared to sleeping with a cat or another human.

Researchers collected survey data from 962 women in the United States to investigate their relationship between sleep and pet ownership status. The breakdown of the participants was as follows:

  • 55 percent shared a bed with at least one dog

  • 31 percent shared a bed with at least one cat

  • 57 percent shared their bed with another human

  • 93 percent lived with a dog or cat

Turns out, dogs are the best sleep partners of the three. The abstract shares that when "Compared with human bed partners, dogs who slept in the owner's bed were perceived to disturb sleep less and were associated with stronger feelings of comfort and security." This came as no surprise to me, a dog lover, but I'm glad there's more scientific proof that dogs are significantly better than cats (a controversial statement) and humans (a hard truth.)

"Conversely," the report adds, "cats who slept in their owner's bed were reported to be equally as disruptive as human partners, and were associated with weaker feelings of comfort and security than both human and dog bed partners."

In other words, if you're looking for someone to keep you company at night, but want the fewest disruptions while you sleep and most comfort and security, you need a pup. You can even get them a matching PJ set to thank them for their service to your peaceful slumber.
