How does Netflix's The Recruit end? The finale explained

There's a brand new Netflix crime thriller to get stuck into, aka Noah Centineo's spy drama The Recruit.

The series dropped on Netflix today (16 December), showing Noah in a whole new light. The To All The Boys I Loved Before actor stars as rookie CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks who gets thrown into the deep end in the world of international espionage. *Spoilers ahead*.

Still, being a spy show and all, the season one finale left us with SO many questions: Will Owen escape from Karolina? Is Max still alive? And do Owen and Hannah end up together?

Fans are of course already calling for a season two to have their questions answered. But in the meantime, here's a run-through of the The Recruit ending explained.

The Recruit ending explained

The eighth and final episode of The Recruit ends on a *huge* cliffhanger, with Owen and Max kidnapped, resulting in Max being shot.

To backtrack, the season finale saw Owen and Max going to Prague for a final mission. However, Max's meeting with an unknown group of Russians results in a dramatic shoot out. Owen tries to help and Max manages to drive the two of them away - with Owen revealing that Nichka was part of the group shooting at them.

We then see Owen going into shock and struggling to comets terms with the fact that he killed a man. Distressed, Owen threatens to leave the CIA, with Max then pointing her gun at him - although it's clear she can't go through with shooting him.

The finale moves on briefly to Owen's relationship with ex-girlfriend Hannah. The two had planned to meet, but just as Owen is approaching Hannah in the street a black car pulls up and he's kidnapped right before her eyes.

Owen finds himself tied to a chair alongside Max, with their kidnappers at first unknown. The culprit then appears: a mysterious blonde woman who'd previously introduced herself as Marta. However, it becomes clear that Max knows her, addressing her kidnapper as Karolina before speaking in Russian.

In a shock turn of events, Karolina shoots Max, and at the end of the episode we don't know if she's alive or dead.

Karolina then issues the biggest plot twist of the series, asking Owen, "Who are you? And what the f**k are you doing running around with my mother?" Argh!

The finale ends right there and, yep, we have SO many questions. Fingers crossed things can be at least somewhat resolved in a second season? We can dream.

The Recruit is streaming now on Netflix.
