DJ Tiesto Marries Model Annika Backes In Utah Desert Wedding

DJ Tiesto is officially a married man. After a weekend of festivities, the “Red Lights” musician shared the news of his marriage to his longtime girlfriend, Annika Backes, via Instagram on Monday. “Love of my life,” he expressed alongside the wedding date of “21-09-2019.”

The intimate ceremony, held on September 21, took place at Amangiri, a luxury resort located in the middle of the desert in Utah. “We love the silence and the scenery that makes you feel like you are on another planet,” Backes told Vogue Weddings of the unique location. “The contrast of the architecture with the desert is a perfect balance. It looks like you are in a James Bond movie, and that’s some of the aesthetic we were going for. We wanted it to be glamorous, romantic, and sexy, while still being natural and intimate, so we rented out the entire resort for the weekend for our 80 guests.”

The model paid homage to the scenery’s natural beauty by wearing two dresses on her wedding day: one from Berta, the other from Oscar de La Renta. “The sparkle of the Berta in contrast with the backdrop of the natural desert during our ceremony felt like exactly the aesthetic we were going for,” she explained. “In the Oscar, you feel and look like you are floating because of the delicate fabric, A-line shape, and slight translucency, which was perfect for the after-party.”

The groom, whose real name is Tijs Verwest, wore a Tom Ford ensemble inspired by his favorite fictional character. “Annika and I are obsessed with James Bond and everything he stands for,” he explained. “He’s like a timeless modern masterpiece, and that’s definitely the look I was going for with my tuxedo.”

After the ceremony, the couple celebrated with their loved ones well into the night. During the reception, the renowned hit-maker surprised his wife with a brand new song he wrote specifically for her, entitled “A Million Years.” “I was completely surprised—it was so much fun to dance together for the first time [to this song], and everyone loved it,” she recalled.

While a fireworks show marked the end of the evening, the newlyweds made the most of their location by sleeping out under the stars. “The whole thing couldn’t have gone any better,” Tiesto said.

The couple, who met in 2015, got engaged over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2018. “I thought we were just going for a romantic dinner, but right when we got to the restaurant I knew something was up,” Backes said of the proposal.”There was a rose petal path leading to one single table, and there was a private band… I think we were both so excited and nervous that he got down on one knee soon after we got there. It was so romantic and over the top.”
