How to Make Witch Brooms:

Supplies Needed

  • Wooden dowel (1-inch diameter, 36 inches long)

  • Tree branch (approximately 36 inches long)

  • Bamboo branch (approximately 36 inches long)

  • Lavender acrylic paints

  • Paintbrush

  • Fine-grit sandpaper

  • Willow twigs, bamboo, and decorative grass (for broom brushes)

  • Three pieces of black, interfacing fabric: 2x10-inch strips.

  • Raffia and twine

  • Hot-glue gun and hotmelt adhesive

Step-by-Step Directions

Follow these easy instructions to make your own set of three broomsticks. You should be able to complete this Halloween decor project in under an hour.

Step 1: Paint It

This DIY witch broom is a cool Halloween decoration with an even cooler level of simplicity. You'll be able to add this Halloween witch broom to your outside Halloween decorations in just one afternoon. Start by painting the wooden dowel with lavender acrylic paint; once the paint is dry, lightly sand the dowel with fine-grit sandpaper for a worn look.

Step 2: Build It

Choose one of the broom brush materials (willow twigs, bamboo, or decorative grasses) to go with each broom handle. For each broom, lay the brush material across one length of interfacing fabric so about 2 inches of brush material extends beyond the fabric. Hot-glue into place and let the glue dry, then wrap the interfacing end of the brush around the bottom of the broom handle (with the interfacing facing in), gluing it into place as you wrap.

Step 3: Decorate It

When the glue is completely dry, wrap raffia or twine several times around the top of each broom brush and glue into place. Then, lean the broom against the front porch steps. Don't forget a Witch Parking doormat to guide your local coven!
