Do enough DIY jobs on your car, and you'll slowly start to collect tools. At first, it might be easy to keep them organized on a bench or a drawer, but soon enough, you have more tools than you can deal with. It's an even bigger problem when you need to have a handful of tools on you while traveling with your project car. That's why you should own a tool bag.

A regular duffel bag or backpack might work for a short time, but the heft and sharpness of some tools mean eventually, they'll just tear through the lining and make holes. A tool bag is different, as its thicker skin is better designed to resist damage from sharp objects like picks, screwdrivers, and needle-nose pliers.

Better yet, tool bags are specially designed to hold different types of tools in more efficient ways. There are special pockets, straps, and other holders for tools of all different shapes and sizes. This way you can carry more tools with you and keep them more organized.

The bag I use, Hercules' 18-inch unit from Harbor Freight, is a perfect example. The main storage area has a wide zipper opening perfect for fitting longer tools and battery-powered stuff, like my drill and impact wrench. There are also 28 pockets surrounding the outside of the bag, where I put things like screwdrivers, my multi-tool, ratchets, pliers, and more. I never leave home in my project car without this bag in my trunk. Best of all, it costs just $24.99.

If you're in the market for an even bigger tool bag, I get it. The bag above is good for travel, but my collection of tools has far outgrown it. Harbor Freight also sells a 20-inch tool bag from Voyager with an even deeper main storage area and a roller system with an extendable handle. It's perfect if you plan to do a lot of traveling with your tools, and only costs $39.99.
