Disney has made television history after introducing its first-ever non-binary character.
Raine Whispers appears as a character in The Owl House and is voiced by non-binary actor Avi Roque.
Posting the news on Twitter, Avi described the opportunity as a "dream come true", adding that Raine's pronouns are they/them.
"DREAM COME TRUE. I guest star as Raine Whispers (pronouns: they/them), the sharp and hardworking Head Witch of the Bard Coven, in the new episode of The Owl House premiering July 24. Make sure to check it out!!"
The Owl House follows a teenage girl named Luz Noceda, who finds herself in another world after falling through a portal, and then decides to stay there to go on adventures.
Luz befriends Eda the Owl Lady and she quickly becomes Eda's apprentice in her Owl House. Luz trains so that she can find her abilities and will then be able to help fight off evil.
The Owl House was also the first show on the Disney Channel to feature a leading bisexual character. In the episode titled Enchanting Grom Fright, Amity revealed that she wanted to ask her best friend Luz to prom, opening up a relationship storyline in the show.
Dana Terrace, the show's creator previously opened up about identifying as bisexual, adding that the studio executives were open-minded to the idea.
"When I was first developing Owl House I always wanted to do a prom episode to make up for my own experiences," Dana wrote on Twitter.
