Disney Is Reportedly Developing a Live-Action “Bambi”

Who asked for this?!

Just as everyone began recovering from seeing Mufasa die before his young cub’s eyes in the live-action Lion King, Disney is ready to rip out our hearts once again — this time, with a live-action Bambi.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a re-imagined version of the classic 1942 Disney film is already in the works, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer attached to write the screenplay. (Robertson-Dworet previously co-wrote Captain Marvel, and Beer penned the Netflix romcom Sierra Burgess Is a Loser.) THR adds that the live-action Bambi will be produced by Depth of Field, run by Paul and Chris Weitz. Of course, the phrase "live-action" is used a little loosely here, as it will likely rely on similar CG technology as The Lion King and The Jungle Book.

No word yet on when this film will be released (or who will voice the title character and his iconic animal companions), but it’s pretty safe to say that people are…not quite sure how to feel about the news. After all, Bambi is clearly one of the most soul-crushing children’s movies of all time, thanks to the fact that the little deer’s mom gets shot and killed by a hunter halfway through the movie. I don't know about you, but I'll have that scene burned into my brain forever!

Needless to say, people have some, uh, questions about how all of this will translate to “realistic” CG technology. Some folks are wondering if Bambi is just going to stare blankly at the camera like a deer in headlights (get it), while others are worried that the climatic scene in question might be too graphic. The cartoon even had a pool of blood, remember?!

We’ll have to wait and see how the actual film pans out. Here’s hoping that Disney might take some liberties and go with a Thumper and Flower spin-off instead.
