From Harper's BAZAAR

Dirty John Season 1 captivated viewers when it premiered in 2018. Following the real-life story of Debra Newell and John Meehan, the first season explored a twisted romantic relationship that ended in death.

USA Network is bringing Dirty John back for a second season, but this time the show will follow a completely different story. Here's what we know about Dirty John Season 2 so far.

Dirty John Season 2 is about Betty Broderick.

While the first season was all about John Meehan's escapades, Season 2 will focus on Betty Broderick, a woman convicted of her husband's murder, and that of his second wife.

Betty Bisceglia met Dan Broderick in the '60s. They tied the knot in 1969 and had five children together. However, Betty got suspicious when Dan hired a much younger legal assistant called Linda Kolkena in 1982. Though he initially denied having an affair with Linda, and called Betty crazy as a result, Dan later married his legal assistant and admitted to infidelity.

Betty and Dan's complicated divorce involved restraining orders, custody battles, and eventually, murder.

Who stars in Dirty John Season 2?

The star-studded series has attracted some major talent for its second season. Amanda Peet stars as Betty, while her husband is played by Christian Slater.

Peet didn't want to play Betty as "crazy."

In a new interview with Variety, Peet revealed, "I am very close with Holland Taylor, and before I started, she gave me a great piece of advice: Don’t play crazy. She encouraged me to look at each scene as a legitimate protest or a justified experience."

Instead, Peet wanted to make sure that she made Betty's journey believable throughout. As she told the publication, "They appeared to be such an average, suburban American family. And yet the story ended up being so violent and tragic."

Peet continued, "I liked the fact that [creator] Alexandra [Cunningham] was exploring both a psychological portrait—the idea that there was mental illness—and then combining it with some of the nature/nurture things. Like the fact that she grew up in the social mores of the '50s, and I think for some women divorces in the '80s were horrifying."
