Pop singer Shawn Mendes is doing more than just covering this month's edition of The Rolling Stone. In his interview, he reveals new, previously unknown details about his relationship status to model Hailey Baldwin and other confessions.
Back in May of 2018, Mendes attended his first ever Met Gala with Baldwin which intensified rumors of the pair being romantically linked no matter how much they both said they were “just friends.” The rumors came after pictures were taken of Mendes and Baldwin hugging and hanging out throughout a weekend in Mendes’ hometown of Toronto.
Mendes finally admitted that yes, he and Baldwin were more than friends. But it still wasn't enough for him want to put a title on their relationship.
"I think it was more of a zone of limbo," he said.
About only a month after Mendes and Baldwin were seen at the Met Gala holding hands and walking together, Baldwin famously got engaged to her ex-boyfriend and fellow pop singer Justin Beiber — leaving everyone curious about how real her relationship with Mendes really was.
A few weeks after Beiber and Baldwin confirmed their engagement news, Beiber released a new single “No Brainer.” The single stated, “Him or me, be for real, baby, it's a no-brainer” and social media took the “Him” in the lyrics to mean Mendes, however, Beiber has never publicly addressed the rumor.
Mendes stated that he “really [is] happy for them” and that he doesn’t hold a grudge after being asked about social media saying Mendes was seemingly getting played by Baldwin.
“I get it, you know,” Mendes told the writer about how the media portrayed their relationship.
On his Instagram account, Mendes announced to his 38 million followers his cover and interview on Rolling Stone with a caption highlighting that “sometimes the positive side of a story doesn’t always get fully told and I wish it had here. I love what I do and I love you guys so much.”.
This statement comes after the Rolling Stone article stated Mendes “often finds himself watching his own interviews, analyzing his voice and his body language” and feels “extremely neurotic.” He's painted in a slightly less “squeaky-clean image” because of his love for weed and his “strict set of rules” which include to never say no to a selfie. The writer said that typically turns into a mandatory meet and greet of “anywhere from a few fans to several thousand lining up outside."
Mendes also finally addressed the rumor that he's gay. He said he “hates” the side of himself that feels the need to prove that he is not gay when he knows in his heart that it’s not a bad thing.
At the end of the interview, Mendes asked the reporter to send him an audio clip of people near them at a festival singing “Happy Birthday” to someone unknown to the both of them because “it was really beautiful” and he wanted to add it to a song.
