How Did Martin Harris Die in Cruel Summer?

There are still so many questions left to be answered by Cruel Summer, but one of the things we know for sure is that Kate Wallis' kidnapper is Skylin High's new assistant principal, Martin Harris. While Martin appears in the show's 1993 timeline, he is noticeably missing from 1994 and 1995. Well, that's because Martin is killed in July 1994 in the show's first episode. Need a reminder of how Martin died and what we know about his death? Read on for all the deets.
At the end of the first episode, we learn that Kate—who had gone missing almost a year earlier—has been found in July 1994. Jeannette Turner and her family watch the news together, where it is revealed that when Kate was rescued, "her abductor [was] killed in a deadly shoot out."
It's important to note that at that point, the news refers to Martin as Kate's "alleged kidnapper," which could be a hint that there's more to the story. Of course, Kate refers to Martin as her kidnapper multiple times throughout the series, and we see flashbacks of Martin in the basement with Kate so we know he definitely had something to do with it.
There are also references to Martin's death throughout the episodes, with Kate saying Martin is "burning in hell" in episode two. In episode five, Kate even visits and smashes his grave.
So, for once in Cruel Summer, it seems like we have an open and shut case. Martin was killed in a shootout with the police following Kate's rescue in 1994. As of now, we haven't seen much of the initial kidnapping or the rescue, but it's possible we will get to see more as the story continues to unfold.
