Fans may remember the Cartoon Network's Powerpuff Girls as an animated technicolor trio of crime-fighting little girls, but according to Entertainment Weekly, that could change as the CW remakes the show in its signature noir Riverdale style. The magazine adds that Academy Award-winning writer Diablo Cody (remember Juno, Jennifer's Body, and Young Adult?) will pen and executive produced the series, though additional information is scarce.

"The Powerpuff Girls used to be America's pint-sized superheroes, now they're disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting," EW writes of the new take on Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. "Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever? Based on the original Cartoon Network animated series and characters created by Craig McCracken."

While the three main characters are beloved, the show's cast of villains is just as notable, with some standouts being Him, Sedusa, Mojo Jojo, and Lady Lava.

CW viewers know that the network (and more specifically, producer Greg Berlanti) loves to add sex, steam, and seduction to even the most wholesome intellectual property (Riverdale, Dynasty, DC's comic book universe), so there's no telling where Powerpuff Girls 2.0 will go.

Twitter users are still unsure what to think, since sugar, spice, and everything nice — plus some Chemical X courtesy of Professor Utonium — still conjure images of an animated mainstay.

The original Powerpuff Girls series aired for six seasons, with a total of 78 episodes between 1998 and 2005. A Powerpuff Girls movie premiered in 2002 and in 2016, Cartoon Network ordered additional episodes.
