Dermatologists Say These Are the Acne Serums That Really Work

As unfair as it may seem, just because you're starting to see fine lines around your eyes doesn't mean breakouts are a thing of the past. Truth is: There are plenty of adults who struggle with acne. But finding the right serum can help absorb oil, which mattifies the skin and can reduce pimples and whiteheads, says Dr. Michele Green, a board-certified dermatologist in NYC.

In general, look for products with glycolic acid or salicylic acid to help unclog pores and accelerate cell turnover. Antioxidants like niacinamide can also tame any redness and hyperpigmentation associated with acne scars, says Dr. Manish Shah, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Denver, Colorado.

Occasionally, though, serums can actually cause acne—so proceed with caution. "They can lead to breakouts—especially if you're using the wrong one for your skin type," says Green. Some serums can be too oily, which can exacerbate bumps and cause excessive buildup in the pores; other serums may contain high amounts of acids or exfoliants that can irritate the skin more and worsen the condition—especially if your skin is sensitive, she explains.
