  • Denise Austin, 65, recently shared another #fitover50 workout video on Instagram.

  • She revealed an alternative to the classic lunge that’s more friendly to the knees.

  • Her tips include relaxing your leg to protect the joints and allow for thigh activation.

It’s no secret that Denise Austin, 65, has a passion for helping women over 50 achieve their fitness goals with amazing ab workouts and full body workouts. And if you enjoyed the fitness icon’s recent #fitover50 squat workout, we have good news: Austin is back again with more lower body workout tips to help tone and shape the legs. This time, she’s helping break down barriers by proving that everyone can stay on top of their fitness goals, even with age-related knee pain.

“If you have knee trouble and avoid lunges, try them this way!! This will protect your knees and allow you to still do an effective lunge,” Austin captioned her post. “Great for your entire thighs and booty!!”

Ready for the workout? Lace up your sneakers (check out Austin’s favorite shoes while you’re at it!), grab a chair, and get started:

“Here’s a great way to do a lunge,” Austin says. She begins by standing with her back leg elevated, laying the laces of her shoes flat on the seat. Her front leg is outstretched in front of her far enough to allow for a comfortable lunging movement, with her knee aligned with her ankle. She keeps her hands on her hips with her chest forward as she lowers down into the lunge.

“Go down and back up—this helps to protect your knee,” Austin explains. “For any of you that have issues with your knees, try this. This really helps to firm the legs.” In her instructions she also notes that in the movement, you should “relax the back leg—let your thighs do the work.”

If you’ve never performed a lunge variation like this, have no fear: Austin offers additional tips in her caption for those who might need a modification. If you feel unstable or lack balance, Austin suggests to “stand in front of a counter to brace yourself,” and offers words of encouragement, assuring that “you can do it!”

Fans, as usual, enjoyed her latest informative, instructional video. “You are an amazing person and such an inspiration to so many people!! So glad I found you on IG so we can exercise together again,” one fan wrote. “Thank you Denise!” Another commented: “Thank you for this!! My knees are the weakest part of my body. Lunges and squats are always difficult for me. 💔”

Whether Austin is sharing her love for walking, or giving us the 4-1-1 on workouts like this one, she continues to be an inspiration to everyone. And we can’t wait for her next upbeat and effective workout video to drop!
