Demi Lovato wrote a letter to her father in an attempt to release the resentments she had toward him while he was alive.
Demi is now grateful toward him for the good qualities he has given her.
2020 has been a major year of Demi Lovato so far: She’s finally made her long-awaited return to music, she’s now happily engaged to her boyfriend-turned-fiancé, Max Erich, and she seems to be in a very healthy state of mind lately. Part of that healthy state of mind has come from self-reflection, Demi recently shared in a heartfelt letter she wrote for Vogue, in which she addresses her relationship with her late father, Patrick Lovato.
Despite having a rocky relationship with her “abusive” dad, Demi is still incredibly grateful for his passing down some of his better personality traits to her. “There was the anniversary of my father’s death, which is a couple of days after Father’s Day—a really hard time of year for me. But this year, something happened,” Demi wrote.
“I wrote a gratitude letter to him, thanking him for all the things that I got from him,” she explained. “It was this beautiful release of all the resentments I had toward him. I realized, for the first time, that I wasn’t going to have daddy issues for the rest of my life.”
Thank you @voguemagazine for allowing me to write so freely... 🤍🖤 Read my full letter with @vogue with my link in story “Moving forward, I want to put my energy into my music and my advocacy work. I want to continue to strive to be a better person. I want to inspire people in many different ways to do the same. Above all, I want to leave the world a better place than when I got here. There are a lot of things that need to be done before that, but together I believe we can make it happen. You just need to be a little bit hopeful.”

Demi’s realization didn’t come easy though—Demi explained that 2020 has been a massive year of growth for her and that Max has been helping her deal with her anxiety and mental health since the beginning of the pandemic.
“Initially, I was resistant, but because my fiancé is so positive all the time, I just started picking up on the things he does,” she wrote. “I started meditating and doing yoga. I started journaling, painting, taking pictures and being creative, and learning to appreciate nature after realizing I’d been taking it for granted all this time.”
Glad to see that Demi is in a happy and healthy place right now, and can’t wait to see her thrive throughout the rest of this year!
