For the bulk of her 15-year career, Demi Lovato has been open about her outpouring support for the LGBTQ+ community. Her 2015 hit "Cool for the Summer," which garnered a whole new generation of fans after it began trending on TikTok this year, details her journey with bisexuality. The multihyphenate also came out as nonbinary while promoting her podcast 4D with Demi Lovato in 2021, where she said she identified with they/them pronouns. Since then, Lovato's Instagram profile has revealed that she now uses both she/her and they/them pronouns, and she spoke on her current identity in 2022.

"Yeah, so, they/them is... I've actually adopted the pronouns of she/her again," Lovato said in an August 2022 interview on the Spout podcast. "For me, I'm such a fluid person that ... I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy." She went on to explain that she had trouble choosing whether to use a men or women's restroom because she "just felt like a human."

"That's what they/them is about for me. It's just about, like, feeling human at your core," she explained to Spout host Tamara Dhia. "Recently, I've been feeling more feminine, and so I've adopted she/ her again. But I think what's important is, like, nobody's perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning. It's just all about respect."

This isn't the first time the musician addresses being misgendered — she thanked Lizzo for defending her in the media in July 2021. During Non-Binary Awareness Week last year, Lovato also reminded fans that mistakes are bound to happen with a series of tweets. "If you misgender me, that's okay. I accidentally misgender myself sometimes!" she wrote.

"As long as you keep trying to respect my truth and as long as I remember my truth, the shift will come naturally," she wrote. "I'm just grateful for your effort in trying to remember what means so much to my healing process."
