Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich have called it quits two months after getting engaged, a source close to Lovato confirmed to Insider on Thursday.

"It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers," a source told People.

The source added, "They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together."

Multiple outlets reported that Ehrich and Lovato were in the early stages of their relationship in March 2020. However, they haven't confirmed where they met or exactly when they began spending time together.

The couple frequently appeared in each other's social media posts in the months that followed, as they quarantined together in the same house.

In July 2020, Ehrich proposed to Lovato, who announced their engagement on Instagram.

"I knew I loved you the moment I met you. It was something I can't describe to anyone who hasn't experienced it firsthand but luckily you did too.. I've never felt so unconditionally loved by someone in my life," she wrote.

Ehrich also shared photos from the proposal and wrote: "Words cannot express how infinitely in love with you I am forever and always and then some."

Lovato said that quarantining together during the pandemic "accelerated" their relationship while appearing on SiriusXM Hits 1's "The Morning Mash Up" in September.

"We were able to share this time together that we wouldn't have normally gotten to spend. And that accelerated our relationship on a level that you can't really explain to people, but quarantine either makes or breaks the deal. And it really made that. So I'm really blessed, really fortunate and continuing to count my blessings every day," she said.

Lovato continued, "We started dating. We immediately went into quarantine. I knew I loved him the night I met him. So a week later we went into quarantine. I was like, 'Look, we're quarantining together. Um, cause I love you.'"

Days later, fans began questioning Ehrich's intentions when they discovered purported screenshots of the actor's old social media posts, which showed the actor sending flirtatious comments to Selena Gomez, Lovato's on-and-off friend.

Ehrich deleted his Twitter after the posts flooded the site, and the "Sorry Not Sorry" singer defended him, telling fans the images were "doctored" in a statement she posted to her Instagram story.

"It's really sad when people FAKE images to put women against each other. If women have conflict that's between them NOT YOU," she wrote.

And while Lovato stood by Ehrich amid the controversy, a source told E! News that the singer was "really upset" about the posts and said her friends were growing concerned about the relationship.

"She truly cares about Max and wants to think his intentions are genuine," the source said, adding, "People close to Demi have expressed that they are worried and are hesitant about Max."
