After taking a brief break from the spotlight following her overdose in 2018, Demi Lovato is opening up about the hurdles she's overcome during her decades-long career. And, according to the star, one of those difficult moments included coming out to her parents as sexually fluid.
In a new interview with Andy Cohen on his "Radio Andy" SirusXM show, Demi discussed her sexuality — which she admits she's "still figuring out" — and how she told her parents about the possibility of her ending up with a woman three years ago. Understandably, the singer was nervous to have the conversation, but it ended up being a "beautiful" experience.
"It was actually, like, emotional but really beautiful," Demi said. "After everything was done, I was, like, shaking and crying. I just felt overwhelmed. I have such incredible parents. They were so supportive."
Demi added that she was most concerned about how her mother would react to the news. “My dad was like, ‘yeah, obviously,'” she said. “And I was like, ‘Oh, okay Dad.' My mom was the one that I was, like, super nervous about, but she was just like, 'I just want you to be happy.' That was so beautiful and amazing, and like I said, I’m so grateful.”
Ever since 2017, Demi has spoken publicly about not putting a label on her sexuality, and, a year later, she expressed that she'd be open to dating a man or a woman. "I'm very fluid, and I think love is love. You can find it in any gender," she previously told InStyle. "I like the freedom of being able to flirt with whoever I want."
Last month, Demi admitted that she'd like to start a family within the next decade during an interview with Zane Lowe on New Music Daily, however, she isn't predicting the gender of her co-parent just yet.
“I don’t even know if I see it with a man or a woman, but like I just know that at some point I would love to do that this decade,” she said. “If it doesn’t happen this decade, maybe the next, I don’t know. We’ll see. But I would love to start doing more things that make me happy and worry less about success.”
Hats off to Demi for fully embracing her authentic self.
