These Delicate Lace Tattoos on the Dion Lee Runway Looked So Real, They Were Mistaken for Fabric

The newest take on tattoos at New York Fashion Week was dreamed up with a more delicate execution in mind. This morning at Dion Lee, the Spring 2019 collection's swaths of filmy lace—which cut its own silhouettes and peaked prettily from beneath cut-outs and tailored separates—served as inspiration for a series of temporary tattoo transfers that mimicked the finespun fabric, creating the illusion that models and their runway ensembles were, in fact, one in the same.

Positioned to snake down necks, adorn single shoulders like fragile epaulettes, decorate rib cages, and, in one instance, sneak from beneath a skirt's hem to graze the knee, the ink was the work of makeup artist Erin Parsons, who utilized a duplicate of Lee's textile, the design then carved into downsized ornaments. The merger of the ethereal fabric and tattoo culture was an appropriate maneuver, given that Parsons was aiming for a look that was sophisticated, but subtly tough.

For those who don't plan to get inked anytime soon, Parsons offered a wearable makeup equivalent with edge by way of a flattering boyish brow, filled out with—no coincidence here—Maybelline's Tattoo Studio and finished with a coat of transparent Great Lash mascara. As for those who found themselves unable to stop peering at the pretty press-ons from the front row? With designs this delicate and nuanced, even those who have sworn off tattoos in their harder incarnations may be forced to reconsider.
