Would you put catnip on your face? Decléor thinks you should. The newest addition to the French brand’s Aurabsolu collection is the Refreshing Mist. The face mist’s ingredients include mint-flower water, salicylic acid, lemongrass, thyme, rosemary, and nepeta cataria herb — aka cat nip. “The infamous nepeta cataria plant has been proven to promote healthy skin due to its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antioxidant properties,” Decléor director of education, Jaklin Idris, told Allure. “Plus, it’s been used for centuries as an aromatherapy agent to relax the senses and get rid of ailments like migraines.”

The ingredient is known to have positive medical benefits when taken in proper doses, and is an effective naturopathic solution to many ailments. Historically, it has been used topically to relieve swelling, arthritis, and hemorrhoids. It has also been taken orally — plain or in tea as a digestive aid, to trigger the onset of menstruation, and to calm fever and upper respiratory infection. That all sounds great, but is there any benefit to spraying it on your face? Given its mild nature, the proper dose is not especially low, and it’s unclear whether a clear mist like Decléor’s will contain enough of the ingredient to garner significant results. So while catnip face mist may not be harmful, you’re likely to benefit more from other methods that truly harness the natural remedy that catnip can provide. Facial spray users will enjoy the other ingredients in the Refreshing Mist, which are as moisturizing as any other, but if you want to truly reap the benefits of catnip, you may want to start out by trying the actual plant.
