'Deadpool 2': Watch Ryan Reynolds's foul-mouthed antihero meet Josh Brolin's Cable (and mock 'Justice League')

Deadpool 2 is one of the summer’s most highly anticipated releases, and though the film has used social media to continually stoke interest — in addition to premiering a great stand-alone “trailer” before last March’s Logan, along with a painterly online promo — actual footage from the upcoming sequel has so far been scant. That changes today, however, with the premiere of a new full-length trailer, which shows that Ryan Reynolds’s Merc with a Mouth will once again be in fine wise-ass form, and dealing with a gruff new time traveling buddy in the figure of Josh Brolin’s Cable.

Though it still doesn’t have an official title (let the speculation begin about the absurd moniker Reynolds is cooking up), the follow-up to 2016’s R-rated hit definitely looks like it’ll be a bigger, bolder, and even more absurd and profane outing for the red-clad assassin. Of course, this tease still doesn’t tell us anything about the plot because its first half is spent showing off Brolin’s from-the-future badass with a pre-CGI-enhanced mechanical arm which causes Deadpool to halt the proceedings and take a shot at Justice League‘s much-maligned effects. “Why aren’t the visual effects done yet?! It’s a middle arm. … It’s not like we’re trying to remove a mustache!”

Mr. Pool then explains the movie’s (fake) plot with action figures. After that ridiculousness is done, we’re then treated to a bevy of context-free, typically over-the-top sights, which involve considerable punching and leaping, Julian Dennison giving someone the middle finger, Karan Soni’s taxi driver weeping, and guns, guns, guns oh, and also Reynolds’s burned-face protagonist breaking the fourth wall to comment on the script’s laziness.

The film has released a synopsis, although as you’ll see, it’s probably not something to take too seriously:

After surviving a near fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover.

All in all, the above trailer delivers just the sort of self-conscious nonsense one expects — and demands of the big-budget film, which should boast some serious action mayhem courtesy of director David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde).

With or without a title, the Deadpool sequel will land in theaters on May 18.
