WARNING: Major spoilers for Dead to Me Season 2 lie ahead.

If, like me, you've already binged Dead to Me Season 2, you're likely wondering whether we'll ever find out what happens after that dramatic cliffhanger.

At the end of Season 2, Jen (Christina Applegate) and Judy (Linda Cardellini) were involved in a hit-and-run car crash, in which the culprit drove off and left both women injured. The driver of the other car was none other than Steve's twin brother, Ben (James Marsden), who had entered into a romantic relationship with Jen this season.

Clearly, we all want to know what happens next in Netflix's popular dark comedy, and the streamer has officially renewed the show for a third season. Here's what we know so far about Dead to Me Season 3.

Season 3 will be the show's last season.

Yes, Dead to Me's third season will be its last. Reflecting on the series coming to an end, showrunner Liz Feldman said Dead to Me is "exactly the show I wanted to make" in a statement to Deadline.

"Telling a story sprung from grief and loss has stretched me as an artist and healed me as a human," she added. "I’ll be forever indebted to my partners in crime, my friends for life, Christina and Linda, and our brilliantly talented writers, cast and crew. I am beyond grateful to Netflix for supporting Dead To Me from day one, and I’m thrilled to continue our collaboration."

Applegate also commented on the news in a tweet, saying "this was the best way to tie up the story of these women." She added that production hasn't begun yet, saying that the team will return to work "when it is safe to do so."

The story has been approved by Netflix.

Fans can rest assured that the storyline of Dead to Me Season 3 will be every bit as exciting as its predecessors. In September 2020, Feldman took to Twitter to reveal, "Just pitched all of @deadtome Season 3 to my partners at @Netflix and they’re excited and I’m excited and I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY’RE GONNA LET ME TELL THIS STORY."

While it's unclear, as yet, what that story might be, it's clear that Feldman is committed to sending off the show in the best possible way.

The showrunner is "cautiously optimistic" about the third season of Dead to Me.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter's podcast, TV's Top 5, Liz Feldman revealed, "I want this show to hopefully be as good as it possibly can be for however long it's on." She continued, "And obviously you want to have some control over your destiny. You want to know, 'Okay, well, this is my last season. So I'm going to end this story and I'm going to close out these characters in a satisfying way.'"

At the time, Feldman also revealed, "I don't see this show as a six or seven season show."

Will all of the cast return for Dead to Me Season 3?

It seems likely that Applegate's Jen and Cardellini's Judy will both be back for Season 3. However, Jen looked as though she might be seriously injured in the Season 2 finale, which could have some serious consequences for all of the characters in a potential Season 3.

It seems likely that Steve's semi-identical twin brother, Ben, who is also played by James Marsden, will be back, considering he was the culprit in the finale's car crash. Plus, as Steve's body was discovered in the same episode, drama is likely to ensue regarding his death.

Jen's sons, Charlie (Sam McCarthy) and Henry (Luke Roessler), are both important cast members, and we can assume they will be back. They both recently took part in a cast table read that was broadcast during quarantine.

Detective Ana Perez, played by Diana-Maria Riva, has been driving the plot of the show, and will presumably continue her investigations in a future season. It's unclear whether or not her ex-girlfriend, Michelle (Natalie Morales), who had a romance with Judy in Season 2, will be back.

When will Dead to Me Season 3 be released?

We could be seeing more Dead to Me episodes in 2021. As Season 1 hit the streaming service in May 2019, and Season 2 arrived in May 2020, it's possible that Season 3 could arrive around the same time in 2021. However, the coronavirus pandemic could have an impact on future production schedules, and fans of the show might be hit with an extra delay.
