Danny O'Connor drops out of super lightweight title fight vs. Jose Ramirez due to dehydration
Jose Ramirez might have to wait a little longer to mount his first title defense. Challenger Danny O’Connor, who was set to challenge Ramirez for the WBC super lightweight title on Saturday, has dropped out of the fight due to “various dehydration symptoms.”
The World Boxing Council announced the unfortunate news Friday afternoon, noting that O’Connor felt the symptoms during his weigh-in and was immediately taken to the hospital.
The title fight was schedule to take place late Saturday night at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. It is currently unclear if their will be a replacement fight.
Ramirez was set to mount his first title defense near his hometown of Avenal, Calif., his first fight since dropping legendary trainer Freddie Roach. The 25-year-old is an undefeated 22-0 since turning pro following the 2012 Olmypics. The 33-year-old O’Connor carried a record of 30-3 going into Saturday, most recently beating Steve Claggett by unanimous decision to retain the WBC International Silver super lightweight belt in March.
