Danny McBride's ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Took a Hilariously Subtle Dig at Donald Trump
Leave it to Danny McBride to come in with the subtlest of Donald Trump drags. As if having an oil painting of yourself isn’t enough of an indicator of an absolutely insufferable human, it appears that Jesse Gemstone (McBride) had some very specific inspiration for the oil painting appearing in Sunday night’s episode of The Righteous Gemstones. Here's a look at the painting in full:
The oil painting looming over Jesse’s head bears a striking resemblance to one that Trump had commissioned of himself in 1987. The original, painted by Ralph Wolfe Crown, features a proud Trump with a hand in his pocket and another draped over his leg. Similarly, Jesse is posed with a hand in his pocket and another draped over his leg. Here's the real original painting:
Everything in McBride's Gemstones painting matches the Trump portrait—from the white tennis sweater to the frame. This seems to indicate that the megachurch billionaire grifter family is a big fan of the Trumpster.
The painting, titled “The Entrepreneur,” hangs at Mar-a-Lago (because of course it does) and has a storied past according to a discussion that Hyperallergic had with the painter a few years back. Trump allegedly didn't like the artistic direction of the painting and didn't enjoy the unfinished look of the portrait.
“He kept saying, ‘When are you going to finish the painting?'” Cowan told Hyperallergic. “And I kept explaining to him, ‘You bought an oil sketch.’ And he didn’t get it when I kept saying it that way.”
God love Danny McBride and the prop master behind The Righteous Gemstones for the subtle dig. The HBO show, following the criminally insane, morally objectionable family is only three episodes deep, so it’s just getting started.
