'Dancing With the Stars' Fans Are Fuming at Bruno Tonioli Over Johnny Weir's Score

From Good Housekeeping

  • On Monday night’s Dancing With the Stars episode, Johnny Weir and Britt Stewart performed a contemporary dance for ‘80s Night.

  • DWTS judge Bruno Tonioli gave the figure skater and pro dancer a score of 9 out of 10.

  • Fans of the ABC dancing competition show got into a debate about the almost perfect score.

Johnny Weir stunned on Dancing With the Stars Monday night, but it still wasn't enough for judge Bruno Tonioli to hand over a 10.

The Olympic figure skater felt in his element performing a contemporary dance to Bonnie Tyler’s hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” with pro dance partner Britt Stewart for ‘80s Night. Johnny compared the experience to being back in his “happy place on the ice,” despite dealing with a broken toe injury throughout the evening.

In the end, the duo earned their highest score yet after judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Derek Hough gave them both a 10. Bruno, however, doled out a 9 and some constructive criticism.

“Connecting, projecting, emoting. What you’re doing now, which is the sign of an artist, you really give dance a meaning,” Bruno said. “We always know that you have great extension, elevation. You can feel the space but not just with the moves, with the emotion. A tiny, tiny, I know it’s a picky little thing. Use a little bit of the contraction. A little bit more, you know what I’m talking about.”

Boos were heard offstage in response to the criticism. “Alright, alright. Everybody can learn,” Bruno responded. “Beautiful.”

DTWS fans immediately took to Twitter to call out Bruno’s score, which still gave the couple a 29 out of 30, the best score of the night.

“I love ya Bruno, but they deserved a 10! #teambrijo was absolutely perfect tonight!!! Way to go @JohnnyGWeir!!!! 🙌🕺🙌🏆,” one person wrote. “Bruno you’re so wrong Johnny deserved a 10,” another added. “Just watched Johnny & Britts dance again...chills!! How the h-ll did this not get all 10s! Bruno what’s good?” a different fan said. “C'mon Bruno! Johnny deserved all 10s ❤️,” a follower commented.

That said, others agreed with the Italian choreographer and his technical notes, which may have resulted in the point being taken off.

“I’m with Bruno. I'd give it a 9! Britt is an incredible pro! Good job Johnny,” a person tweeted. “Bruno’s notes were my thoughts exactly,” another said.

Regardless of differing opinions, we can all agree that Johnny is improving each and every week. Who knows, he might just take home the Mirrorball Trophy this season!
