'The Daily Show' visits Chicago and defends city against Trump's murder rate comments

The Daily Show With Trevor Noah went to Chicago this week and quickly turned the heat on Donald Trump‘s comments concerning how violent the city is. Trump has said, “I don’t want to have thousands of people shot in a city where essentially I’m the president.” Host Trevor Noah laid into Trump, saying, “I like how he says he’s ‘essentially the president.’ No, Donald, you are the president.”

Noah said that the president sees Chicago as “Syria but with different pizza,” in response to Trump’s comment that “Chicago is worse than some of the countries you read about in the Middle East.”

The Daily Show wanted to visit Chicago because it felt like it represents a microcosm of the issues that the rest of the country is facing — and that political pundits don’t actually care about Chicago’s murder rates, but only about scoring political points. Referring to the trash-talking that pundits did during Barack Obama’s presidency concerning violence in Chicago, Noah said, “Oh, now I get it. When there are shootings, Obama’s from Chicago. All the other times, he’s from Kenya. Now it makes sense.”

Noah said that what was important was not whether Chicago was ranked No. 1 in murders or No. 9. What was important was stopping the murders. Fortunately, Trump had asked a police officer for advice while visiting the Windy City. Trump commented, “I said, ‘How long would it take you to straighten out this problem?’ He said, ‘If you gave me the authority, a couple of days.'” Noah had no time for this dismissal of how complicated of an issue urban violence is. “Wow,” he said, “Trump’s imaginary friend can fix Chicago in a couple of days.”

The Daily Show airs weeknights at 11 p.m. on Comedy Central.
