More than 100 million Capital One customers have had their personal information hacked—one of the largest-ever thefts of data from a bank.
“From a data breach like this it just tells you even the biggest banks with the most money are not safe from an attack,” cybersecurity expert Gary Miliefsky explained.
The third-largest credit card issuer in the U.S. was hacked on July 19. Approximately 106 million customers in Canada and the U.S. were affected, including people who applied and were rejected for credit cards. The breach exposed the personal information of customers, including: names, addresses, zip codes, phone numbers, birth dates, and self-reported income. Approximately 140,000 Social Security numbers were also revealed, as well as approximately 80,000 linked bank account numbers.
Capital One announced the breach on July 29 after the alleged hacker was arrested.
“With Capital One of any company, the good news is that they admitted it quickly. We have laws that say they could actually wait up to 30 days,” said Miliefsky. “[The faster you disclose that you’ve been breached and take steps to remediate you consumers the better a bank you are and the better organization you are.”
Capital One said it will contact those who have been affected by the breach.
