I've always been a dog person (as Benny, my very spoiled Yorkie, can attest). Naturally, I think he’s the cutest dog ever, but I’m sure every other dog owner thinks the same about their pup. So who’s right? With so many cute dogs out there, that’s a tough question to answer. It’s also highly subjective. Here are some of the best-loved breeds — and what makes each special.
The Cutest Big Dog Breeds
For many, cute puppies and teacup doggies are favorites. But being teeny-tiny isn’t a requirement for being cute. Big dog breeds can be just as precious as those fun-sized pets.
Golden Retriever
The golden retriever is about as wonderful as they come. These phenomenal family dogs have long furry coats that are soft to the touch, and their big floppy ears make them look like they're smiling. Golden retrievers are very friendly and good with kids, which makes them a popular choice for families. They do need plenty of exercise and stimulation, though. Without it, they can become bored and destructive. That said, if you're looking for a lovable, family-friendly pet, the golden retriever is the way to go.
Newfoundlands
These gentle giants are large and cuddly with a thick coat that’s made for snuggling. They’re also as loyal and kind as dogs come. They love to play fetch and are great with kids and other animals, which makes them fantastic family pets. In addition to being cute, cuddly, and playful, Newfoundlands are intelligent and easy to train.
St. Bernard
The first time I ever saw a St. Bernard, I couldn't believe my eyes — these fur babies are enormous! (They can reach a whopping 180 pounds and stand at roughly 37 inches when full-grown.) But just because they’re big doesn’t mean they’re not cute. St. Bernards have fluffy fur that makes them look like they're always wearing a cozy sweater, and their sweet faces are incredibly expressive.They’re also friendly, gentle souls. They make great family pets and are known for being exceedingly patient with kids.
Irish Wolfhound
All dogs are cute, but the Irish Wolfhound is one of the sweetest big dog breeds you’ll ever meet. Don’t let their size intimidate you; these gentle giants love nothing more than cuddling with their owners. Loyal and intelligent, they make wonderful family companions, especially for those who live in cold climates. (The Irish wolfhound's thick fur makes them well-suited for icy winters.) However, if you live in a small apartment, they’re not for you. Their large size means they need lots of exercise and space to run around in. For those with the time and square footage to properly care for an Irish wolfhound, this unique breed is an absolute delight.

The list of cute lap dog breeds is long. Whether it's their big eyes or tiny snouts, these small pups just make your heart melt. Here are some especially cute small dog breeds.
Pomeranian
There's a reason why Paris Hilton is obsessed with Pomeranians: They’re cuddly, affectionate, and super cute. Poms are also incredibly smart and easy to train. Live in an apartment? These little fluff balls are ideally suited for smaller spaces. Just be prepared to give them plenty of love and attention, as they won't settle for anything less.
Bichon Frise
Bichon Frise is an adorable small dog breed that’s often called a "puffy cloud of cuteness." Well known for their gentle disposition and loving nature, they make wonderful companion animals. Bichon Frises are also very intelligent, relatively easy to train, and good with children. Have allergies? This little dog breed has a hypoallergenic coat. If you're looking for a lovely little dog who’ll bring joy to your life, consider adopting a Bichon Frise. You won't be disappointed.
Yorkshire Terrier
A Yorkshire terrier (better known as the Yorkie) is an adorable small dog breed with a whole lot of spunk. Beloved for their long, flowing, silky coats and confident personalities, these fearless companions love a challenge. In addition to their big personalities and sweet demeanor, Yorkies are intelligent, making them easy to train. The only downside to these pocket-size pups is that they can come with a hefty price tag. According to the president of the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,200 to $2,000 for a purebred Yorkie. Still, if you’re looking for the cutest of cutie patootie pups, this small breed is worth it. (My Yorkie, Benny, agrees.)
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Corgis are one of the most adorable dog breeds around. Small and stocky with short legs and big ears, they’re impossible not to fall in love with. But this tiny dog breed is much more than a pretty face. Corgis are friendly, intelligent, and unconditionally loving. And despite their small size, these pups have big energy. If you're looking for a loyal companion that enjoys snuggling up on the couch as much as they love long walks around the park, a corgi just might be the right breed for you.
