Your iPhone home screen is it right now. If your social media feed looks anything like mine, it's filled people discussing how they're customizing their home screens after the new iOS 14.
Before Apple released the latest version of its operating system, users were basically relegated to a standard grid format to organize all the apps on their phones. But now, using widgets and “shortcuts,” you can make your iPhone home screen another part of your aesthetic. Lest you think this isn't a real trend, TechCrunch reported that Pinterest broke a global daily download record on September 21 thanks to interest around home screen design and people looking for inspiration and iconography.
If this already sounds confusing to you—trust me, you're not alone. The good news is there are plenty of tutorials going around, including a series of videos from En Flique Creative called “How to Make Your iOS 14 Home Screen Aesthetic AF." The first video alone has over 26 million views. “I knew I needed to hop on as soon as iOS 14 launched,” Katarina Mogus, the founder of En Flique Creative told CNBC. “I was sitting in my room thinking, you know what, I love this, I’m just going to share it with everyone and teach other people how to make this look really cute as well.”
The videos helped boost the profile of the app, Widgetsmith, which Mogus recommends. “Woah! Widgetsmith just went viral on TikTok which is a phrase I don’t even really understand but is having a rather robust result on my life right now,” founder David Smith tweeted.
People started sharing their designs on social media (inspiration, yay!) as well as their frustrations. “My iPhone home screen is undefeated. I have ascended to a higher state of being,” one person wrote. And we're totally onboard with Casey Niestat's idea: “a service where someone comes to your home and organizes your iPhone ios14 home screen to look like the cool ones you see on twitter.”
If you need us, we'll be updating our iPhone home screen for the next week.
